Topic : "Are you even my friend ?"
Text: John 21:15-17
Golden Text: The third time he said to him, " Simon son of John, do you love me?" John 21 :17a
How will you feel if your intimate friend of about four years suddenly ask you; "are you even my friend? " This will shock you and you will be not be at rest until you find out what you have done if really you are a friend. For Peter he  had denied his Master three times and Jesus really needed to be sure if truly he loves him before committing great task to him.
Jesus mission was to reinstate Peter because he was the Centre that held the disciples together. He asked him "do you love me"? three times and each time he responded back with "I love you" , he committed task of feeding and taking care of his sheep to him. Peter had learnt from his mistake, Jesus first used Greek word translated as Agape which means unconditional love for the first two questions, while Peter was responding back with phileo which means affection, affinity or love between brothers or friends. The third question Jesus responded with Phileo  that Peter had used twice, are you really my friend, this hurt Peter and he responded back that you know all things that you are my friend. This experience showed that Peter now acknowledged his weakness, he was no longer confident of himself but broken with a penitent heart
Jesus is not looking for strong people that are too full of themselves , he is looking for men with penitent heart. God is a specialist at using broken vessels for his purpose. Have you strayed away from God's presence and you are thinking God cannot longer use you and your sins are too much for you to fellowship with him again. The word of God for you today is Christ loves you unconditionally and he is willing to restore you, commit greater responsibilities to you if you are willing to love him wholeheartedly. He understands your weaknesses and he is willing to identify with your weaknesses and strengthen you for his own purpose.
Prayer: Father in your mercies reinstate me to your glory and keep me humble in your presence in Jesus name.
