TEXT: 1 KINGS 12: 25 - 33
TOPIC: STEWARDSHIP OF INFLUENCE (6)
KEY VERSE: 1 KINGS 12:28
Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
The power of influence cannot be overemphasized and some have defined leadership as influence. If leadership is influence then we need to see it as Stewardship that we will give account of or else it will be abused.
Jeroboam was the first king of Northern kingdom of Israel. He was a man of influence, creative, skilful, understanding and political acumen. Solomon recognized this and made him head of his labour force for the tribe of Joseph. God entrusted him with his people to lead after the kingdom separated due to the sins of Solomon. In the process of time, Jeroboam forgot that the kingdom was given to him by God and in the process of preserving the Kingdom he led his people astray by establishing Idol in Samaria for people to worship instead of going to Jerusalem the Centre of worship.Jeroboam decision was good politically but it was spiritually wrong. This action of him led many Israel back to idolatry and he became a evil reference and model for all the Kings that succeeded him. God punished him heavily for this by wiping out his generation.
Every abuse of leadership shall be accounted for and God will exercise his fierce judgement right here from earth. If leadership is understood as stewardship because it is influence. People will maximize it and use it with fear so that the wrath of God will not be on them and their generation.
Prayer: Father help me not to abuse the influence you have given me in Jesus name.
