TEXT: 1 KINGS 12:1-10

TOPIC: PEER INFLUENCE (2)

KEY VERSE :1 KINGS 12:8

But Rehoboam rejected the advice the elders gave him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and were serving him.

Counsel of peers usually make sense to us because they appeal to our emotions and stir us up for actions immediately unlike the counsel of Aged or elderly which are usually slow, soft and always give us a time to ponder, open our eyes to see consequences of our actions. Age usually comes with experience and as a result of this they have seen similar situations from experience and know what could be done to avoid a repitition but peers are usually short sighted and may not think beyond the box. The biblical story below allude to this.

Rehoboam was a young king that just ascended the throne of his fathers and was in a dilemma when leaders of labour of his predecessor approached him for a better work service and welfare. He approached his ministers, elders who are competent counselors to the throne. They told him that the labour leaders have spoken well and he should heed to them. The counsel of the elders seemed not to make sense to him and he approached his peers that they grew up together and told him to do otherwise. He went ahead and did according to what his peers told him. The outcome was disastrous, the kingdom was divided and lives were also lost in the the process of using force to keep the nation together.

In the multitude of counselors there is safety. Do not be rash to take decisions based on the counsel you have received from your peers. Take time to ponder on it, pray about it and also seek counsel from Christian elders around you.

Prayer: Lord deliver my life from wrong influences that surround me in Jesus name.
