TEXT Matthew 6:16-18

TOPIC: WATCH AGAINST HYPOCRISY (3)

KEY VERSE: Matthew 6:16

Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

The Pharisees voluntarily fasted fasted twice a week to impress the people with their "holiness". Jesus was not condemning their fasting but their motive behind the fasting which is to seek public praise and approval.

In giving alms, we make contact with people, In prayer, we make contact with God and in fasting we make contact with self. The three are acts of sacrifice which Jesus commended but he preferred it done quietly with sincerity of the heart. He wanted his disciples to embrace spiritual disciplines for the right motives and not for men approval and praise.

Prayer: Father help me to fast according to your purpose in Jesus name.
