Text: Luke 9:51-56.
Topic: Gentleness is Calmness in the midst of opposition (1)
Key verse :And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did? Luke 9:54
Gentleness is reveal in our character when we are faced with critics and opposition. The natural response to fiery opposition is to attack back forcefully but a Christian will rather be calm and respond to issues instead of attacking.
After Assyria invaded the northern kingdom of Israel and resettled it with his own people. The mixed race that developed became known as the Samaritans. " pure bred Jews hated these half breeds" and the Samaritans also hated the Jews. So many tensions and disagreement arose between the two peoples that the Jewish travelers between Galilee and Southern Judea would often walk around rather than through Samaritan territory eventhough this would lengthen their trip considerably but Jesus held no such hatred, he sent his disciples ahead to prepare for his arrival but the Samaritans refused to welcome his disciples. When they were not welcome James and John out of anger want to retaliate by calling on fire to destroy them just like Elijah did but Jesus restrained him.
In the midst of opposition Jesus remembered his primary mission on earth was to save lives and not to destroy lives. Christianity is not propagated by sword but by love. When provoke, intimidate, critic or oppose, let us be calm instead of retaliating or attacking people personalities. Let us emulate Jesus who responded to the issues at hand instead of reacting in anger just like James and John did.
Prayer: Father help me to be calm in the midst of opposition in Jesus name
